During the 19th century, Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon and was under British rule (like so many other places at the time). Though originally much of the original export was coffee, a botanical disease destroyed the entire coffee in only 15 years. So, lead by planter James Taylor in 1867, wide-scale tea plantations were established and thrived, quenching the British thirst for decades.
